Trump Plans to Revoke Legal Status of 240,000 Ukrainians

The Trump Administration plans to revoke temporary legal status for 240,000 Ukrainians who fled Russia’s war, Reuters reported, citing a senior Trump official and three sources familiar with the matter.

the revocation is expected as soon as April and potentially puts them on a fast-track to deportation. The publication said the plans predate President Donald Trump’s Oval Office spat with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

They are part of the Trump Administration’s broader effort to walk back protections extended to some 1.8 million migrants allowed to enter the U.S. under President Joe Biden.

There was no official response from the White House to the reported plans on Ukrainians who fled to the U.S..

Why It Matters

In his first week in office, Trump wasted no time in making good on his hardline immigration promises. Signing a total of ten executive orders, Trump set in motion a sweeping agenda aimed at ramping up border security and expediting mass deportations. While some measures took effect immediately, others have already become the subject of intense legal challenges.

New York Times/Ipsos poll, carried out from January 2 to 10, found 55 percent of voters strongly or somewhat supported such plans. Eighty-eight percent supported “Deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have criminal records.” Large majorities of both Democrats and Republicans agreed that the immigration system is broken.

A January 20 executive order from President Donald Trump directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to “terminate all categorical parole programs,” signaling a dramatic shift in U.S. immigration policy.

Legal Challenge Over Humanitarian Parole for Immigrants

A coalition of American citizens and immigrants is suing the Trump administration over its decision to eliminate a long-standing legal mechanism used by presidents to grant temporary entry to people fleeing war and political upheaval.
