Bizarre reason Elon Musk refuses to ever play GTA

While Elon Musk has already shown he’s a big fan of games like Diablo IVWorld of Warcraft, and Path of Exile 2, did you know there’s a strange reason why he refuses to play Grand Theft Auto?

Ever since Rockstar Games made the first announcement about GTA 6, fans have been going wild, and it’s nowhere near stopping. Gamers wasted no time at all analyzing every detail in GTA VI‘s first trailer, uncovering parts of the main character Lucia’s backstory, and taking a first look at the insane visuals.

Earlier this month, the record-breaking second trailer showed more footage of other protagonist Jason Duvall’s plotline, along with extra hidden details and Easter eggs. Already, some fans believe they’ve worked out the ‘twist’ in the story.

Despite the recently announced delay pushing the GTA 6 release to May 26, 2026, the excitement isn’t dying down among the fandom anytime soon. And while the last people on Earth you’d expect to have the time to sit down and play video games are billionaires, Elon Musk continues to prove he’s an exception.

The Tesla CEO has openly admitted to being a fan of video games and has even credited them as a source of inspiration for some of his work. That said, his ways of levelling up his characters are controversial, as he’s previously been called out for paying someone to level up his character and for exploiting game bugs and loopholes. But when it comes to the Grand Theft Auto series as a whole, the world’s richest man is less bothered.

Back in March 2024, after someone sarcastically commented that their kid could now go back to ‘setting hookers on fire’ in GTA, Musk responded with: “I couldn’t play GTA. Don’t want to hurt them even if they’re NPCs.”

This isn’t the first time the SpaceX founder has expressed his dislike for GTA’s crime world. When an X employee posted a list of games they hadn’t played, which included listing GTA 1-6, Musk replied: “Tried, but didn’t like doing crime.”

Continuing his scathing jibes about the ever-controversial automotive adventure, Musk continued: “GTA5 required shooting police officers in the opening scene. Just couldn’t do it.”

It doesn’t look like he’ll be jumping into GTA 6, as judging by the trailers of high-speed car chases and store robberies – and Rockstar’s typically violent gameplay – it’s safe to say Musk won’t be picking up a controller anytime soon.

Naturally, X users couldn’t help but make light-hearted fun of Musk’s somewhat rigid but wholesome stance for avoiding GTA.

“Did you follow the traffic laws and stop at all the red lights?” one asked, while another reminded him that the characters are “just pixels”.

Another joked: “Elon’s the type of dude to follow the speed limit in GTA.”
